Internal Wall Removal

The Objectives

PB Structural Design were asked to produce a structural design for the removal of a loadbearing internal wall, in between the living room and dining room of a characterful cottage.

The client wanted to create an open plan area, ideal for a family home.

The Process

Cottages are full of character, but the low ceilings and beams can restrict the feeling of space.  This cottage had the same low ceilings and beams, but the client wanted the beams hidden within the ceiling, and any structural piers to be as small as possible to maximise the space and desired open plan layout.  Keeping in line with retaining the character of the cottage, the central fireplace was retained to keep a central feature to the room.

The Outcome

With the internal wall now removed, the client was thrilled with the finished result. With all the characteristics of an older property, the family now had a living space suited to modern day living.
