We were instructed to prepare a structural scheme for a rear and side single storey kitchen extension.
The existing kitchen was small, badly laid out and lacked sufficient natural light. The architect’s vision was to extend the kitchen, reasserting it as the centre of the family home. The vision was to open up the space between the existing kitchen and extension, introducing high levels of natural light as well as a visual connection to the outside garden space.
The Design Process
The kitchen was extended to the side and rear which involved knocking through internal and external loadbearing walls. A new covered entrance area was constructed to the front/side of the house.
The challenge for us was to design the structural scheme with no internal columns or downstand beams to create a flush ceiling throughout and maximise the feeling of space.
The Finished Project
PB Structural Design worked with the architect and client to produce structural details which achieved their desired architectural vision. The finished project created a larger, more practical kitchen space. The large glazed doors to the rear extension provide huge amounts of natural light and stunning views of the garden
