PB Structural Design was appointed to produce a structural design for a large full width single storey rear extension and extensive internal alterations throughout the ground and first floor.
The client wanted to provide a very large open plan ground floor layout, removing the entire rear wall and several other internal loadbearing walls. The overall aim was to achieve a completely flush ceiling throughout, providing a seamless transition between the existing house and extension.
The Design Process
Throughout the process we worked closely with the architect to ensure the structural scheme achieved their architectural vision. The need for flush ceilings throughout created a significant challenge due to the large internal span of the proposed open plan area.
We designed 2 spans of beam, supported on 3 columns creating a rigid frame. The beams were designed as pairs of PFC channels to enable easier installation on site. These channels were detailed to be hidden within the ceiling and the skirting above at first floor.
The Finished Project
The finished extension creates an impressive open plan area and huge family kitchen.
